 ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY: 

St. Joseph’s Preparatory School is a Catholic, Jesuit, independent four-year college preparatory school located on the northern edge of center city Philadelphia. Founded in 1851, this highly-selective, all-male school serves over 900 young men in their pursuit of becoming “men for and with others.” Students come from diverse economic, geographic, racial and ethnic backgrounds from throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area. POSITION SUMMARY: 

The College Counselor works with students and their families throughout the college & career exploration, application, and decision processes. He/She will serve as a liaison between St. Joseph’s Prep and the college admissions offices, communicating trends, opportunities, and advice. In addition to the college and career placement process, the college counselor will serve as an upperclassmen academic advisor, support resources, and monitor student progress and needs. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

● Guide, counsel, and educate students through the career/college admission and financial aid process including but not limited to testing, trends, procedures, interviews, and essay writing. 

● Write letters of recommendation and complete all necessary documentation in support of student applications. 

● Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with colleges/universities on admission trends and opportunities. 

● Provide academic support through appropriate action, solutions, and planning to individual student’s academic and educational needs, abilities, and goals. 

● Consult, facilitate, and maintain communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters. 

● Confidentially and securely manage and complete necessary documentation, notes, and data including but not limited to medical, psychological, academic, communication, or comments. 

● Monitor student progress and wellness on a regular basis across academics, attendance, and other indicators of student success. 

● Conduct small group, classroom, or large scale programs serving parents/students to convey educational, social, and important school information. 

● Participate in the Student Success Team, identify students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinate with resources. 

● Attend relevant professional development programs on/off campus 

* Support the mission and philosophy of the school including but not limited to understand, appreciate and implement the principles of Jesuit education as set forth in Jesuit secondary school literature and the documents of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association.

● Abide by all school policies and regulations 

● Complete other duties and/or projects as assigned 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: 

● Master’s Degree in Counseling/School Counseling, Social Work 

● Minimum of 1-3 years of school counseling/college counseling experience 

● Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals. 

● Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive. 

● Working familiarity with student assessment tools, especially in evaluating and interpreting standardized test results. 

● Knowledge of educational software. 

● Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and word processing functions 

● Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English 

● Ability to work legally in the United States (H1B and H2B Visas are not available)
