POSITION:      Elementary Schools Literacy Coach 10M Grant-Funded

 

REPORTS TO:  Site Administrator

 

LOCATION:     Ridge Elementary and Piney Point Elementary Schools

 

SALARY:         The salary for this EXEMPT position will be based on EASMC Specialist Career Ladder for ten-month employees

 

EFFECTIVE:     August 2025

NATURE OF WORK:

This professional position supports the instructional goals of the school and school system by ensuring effective literacy instruction that leads to improved student achievement. The Grant-Funded Elementary Schools Literacy Coach mentors and models best practices for staff, enhances instructional delivery, and collaborates with school teams to analyze assessments, support Tier 1 whole- and small-group instruction, and provide professional development for teachers, support staff, and parents.

  • Possess knowledge of the programs, policies, and procedures of the St. Mary’s County Public Schools

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates leadership skills and assumes major responsibility for the Read and Lead Grant, including grant management, data collection, and instructional support to schools and staff
  • Works collaboratively with central office, school-based administration, and school-based teacher leadership to help meet instructional goals established as part of the Read and Lead Grant, individual schools’ School Improvement Plans, and MSDE coaching cohort requirements for literacy coaches
  • Models and provides coaching for staff and school teams focusing on areas identified by the system leadership and/or the school site to support increased student achievement in literacy
  • Assists school-based leadership and classroom teachers with the administration and interpretation of formal and informal assessments
  • Analyzes data to impact instruction to include but not limited to the use of the SMCPS data management system
  • Facilitates collaborative team discussions and other data-based decision-making sessions, including Universal Screen Team (UST) meetings and data meetings
  • Meets with the Supervisor of Elementary ELA and/or Instructional Resource Teacher Cohort on a monthly or bi-weekly basis
  • Provides leadership in literacy initiative implementation and prepares required grant reports in a timely manner
  • Participates in system-wide professional development to share at the school level
  • Models and provides coaching for staff providing service to students, focusing on areas identified through universal screening and other summative and formative assessments
  • Models and shares best instructional strategies for SMCPS administration and school-based staff through direct modeling, information sharing at Professional Development sessions, and/or through electronic communication
  • Facilitates professional development for administrators, teachers, and parents as required and/or needed to support system and school initiatives
  • Provides guidance to teachers who work with students to promote their educational development and welfare
  • Plans and coordinates the instructional program in accordance with the current curricula
  • Works in conjunction with other instructional staff to improve delivery of instruction
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Possess advanced professional certificate or license or eligible to receive APC/APL in the current school year (through submission of official transcripts)
  • Minimum of (5) five years of successful teaching experience

Preferred:

  • LETRS 1-8 Training
  • Certification as a reading specialist and/or a master’s degree in an educational field

 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

Full-time ten-month position.

 

SALARY GRADE RANGE: The salary for this EXEMPT position will be based on EASMC Teacher Career Ladder for ten-month employees.
