Job Overview

Substitute Nurse and Health Clinic staff serve to support the health clinic office or school nurse. This substitute may be responsible for providing for the health needs of students during school hours.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ, and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Renders limited first aid; checks temperatures; contacts parents and school personnel as necessary regarding medical issues.  
  • Administers routine prescription and non-prescription medicines, as well as emergency medication to prevent anaphylaxis, per the school district’s medication policy and documents appropriately in the computer.
  • Manages daily care of students with chronic medical concerns according to the individualized health care plans. 
  • Documents student clinic visits and care provided daily on the computer; initiates and completes injury/incident reports as required. 
  • Maintains an organized clinic with necessary items to provide routine first aid and respond to emergencies.  
  • May perform state-mandated screenings and prepare reports.
  • Provides direct nursing service for routine and emergency situations and prepares and maintains medical records.
  • Applies considerable judgment and interpretation in unusual or nonstandard situations.
  • Confers with and advises school administrators regarding student health issues, including student medical concerns, parent medical concerns, health emergency procedures, and special education needs.
  • Collaborates with parents, medical providers, and LCPS staff to manage health issues safely and appropriately at school.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job.

 

     Education

  • Certified degree as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or other relevant health/clinical certifications in the related field.

 

     Experience

  • One year of experience as a registered nurse, LPN, or
  • Experience working with students in the provision of health clinic specialist services or any equivalent combination of education and experience in a setting that would provide the knowledge, abilities and skills listed below
  • Current LCPS health office experience is preferred.

 

     Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing and health care practices as applied to children and youth
  • Ability to provide effective nursing and related health services for students, to keep abreast of medical practices in the field, to deal effectively with students requiring health assistance, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to work cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge and practice of standard first aid and basic health practices.
  • Ability to effectively manage students requiring health or first aid assistance.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.    

 

 

Terms of Employment

Substitutes are employed on an at-will basis and are not considered contractual employees.

 

Substitute Compensation

  • Daily Substitute Registered Nurse Rate - $31.05 an hour or $232.88 a day for a 7.5-hour day
  • Substitute Registered Nurse High Volume Rate - $33.00 an hour or $247.50 a day for a 7.5-hour day
  • Substitute Health Clinic Specialist and Substitute School Nurse Assistant Rate - $19.29 an hour or $135 a day for a 7-hour day
  • Substitute Health Clinic Specialist and Substitute School Nurse Assistant Loyalty Rate (25+ assignments) - $21.43 an hour or $150.01 a day for a 7-hour day
  • Substitute Health Clinic Specialist and Substitute School Nurse Assistant High Volume Rate - $21.43 an hour or $150.01 a day for a 7-hour day
