Job Overview

This is a skilled electrician work in maintaining, installing, repairing, and inspecting electrical systems and equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for repairing electrical systems and equipment in school facilities; installing a variety of electrical fixtures and devices; and inspecting electrical work completed in school buildings. Work is performed in accordance with standard trade practices and applicable codes and regulations. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Repairs, maintains and installs electrical distribution systems and equipment including transformers, electrical panels, circuit breakers, switch gear, motors, pole lights, photo cells, ballasts, interior and exterior light fixtures, keyed electrical controls, photovoltaic arrays, inverters, automatic transfer switch, emergency backup generators, kilns, and other instructional equipment.
  • Inspects and conducts preventive maintenance on electrical systems and equipment; plans work, and orders required parts and materials as needed.
  • Installs new electrical panels, receptacles, switches, light fixtures, wire molding, and conduit; connects electrical service to a variety of equipment including modular work stations and walk-in freezers.
  • Inspects electrical work for compliance with electrical codes and local regulations.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs and programs school clocks and bells; installs and repairs flashing school zone signs.
  • May be assigned to lead a team of maintenance personnel to accomplish a maintenance project.

 

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

 

      Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of an electrician apprenticeship

      Experience

 

      Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License; CDL desired
  • Licensed Journeyman Electrician in Virginia is required; licensed Master Electrician is desired

 

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform skilled electrician work; to use the tools, equipment, and materials of the trade safely and efficiently; to communicate effectively; to work cooperatively with others
  • Knowledge of theater lighting controls, athletic sports field lighting and lighting control systems
  • Basic knowledge of emergency generator power production operations, maintenance and installation
  • Knowledge of the hazards of the maintenance trades and safety precautions utilized to minimize risks
  • Ability to operate a computer-based work management system

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Salary Level: Universal - Non-Exempt Level 10
